The optical collimator uses the principle of refraction of light to convert the divergent light emitted from the optical fiber into parallel light through the lens. In the field of optical communication, it can convert the divergent light output in the optical fiber into parallel light transmission, and vice versa, it can also couple the parallel light into the optical fiber for transmission.

The light emitted from the fiber scatters very quickly in the air and cannot transmit  long distances. And through the lens into parallel light, improve the relative transmission distance.

The conversion of divergent light into parallel light is done by lenses. There are many types of lenses, common spherical lens (Cylindrical-Lens, C-Lens) and self-focusing lens (Grin Lens, G-Lens).

A optical collimator is made by combining a pigtail and a lens, which is the basic component of optical passive devices such as isolators, wavelength division multiplexers, and optical switches.
